St Joseph Catholic Academy

St. Joseph teachers, students, and families are exceptional in their commitment to Catholic School Education. The curriculum challenges students to achieve at high levels and the student to teacher ratio provides plenty of teacher/student interaction. The school community is small and operates much like a family. Using Montessori and multi-age education strategies, students receive a great deal of attention from their teachers and learn very quickly to work together as a team.

Catholic School Education is an investment that parents make in their child's future. There are sacrifices involved but the academic foundation, the moral ethical and character formation that sets us apart can make all the difference in the life of a child. From my own days in Catholic Schools I can tell you that my parents' values and faith were reinforced for me all day - every day. That has not changed - we are Catholic every day!

Please consider the "Catholic School Difference" for your child. You will look back someday and say, "It's one of the best things I ever did for my child".

Marilyn Batson
Principal, St. Joseph Catholic School

Principal
Mrs. Marilyn Batson.
She is in her seventh year as principal at St. Joseph Catholic School. She taught with Springfield Catholic Schools for eleven years before entering the field of administration. She holds Certification in Elementary Education, a Master's Degree, and Certification in Catholic School Leadership. Mrs. Batson is a graduate of St. Agnes Regional High School and also an 8th grade graduate of St. Joseph School (she won't tell us what year but Sister Mary Camillus was principal at the time). Mrs. Batson's personal philosophy of education is summed up in one of our school mottos: "Every child is a gift from God and has been given a gift to share".

Administrative Asst.
Mrs. Trish Wand.
Mrs. Wand is our school secretary. She knows every student and family. She is available every day to assist students and families with questions and procedures. She also loves our library, helps with Book Fairs, and has a girl scout troop!

Preschool-
Mrs. Jan McEvoy
- Mrs. McEvoy is a certified Montessori Preschool Instructor in her nineteenth year of teaching at St. Joseph Catholic School.  She teaches children three through five years of age using the Montessori philosophy and materials.  Nurturing the spirit of each child and cultivating a desire to learn are valued goals in our preschool community.

Kindergarten and 1st grade
Mrs. Bonnie
Johnson graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in Elementary Education. She has 14 years of teaching experience in public and parochial schools. Mrs. Johnson has taught Kg., 1st, 5th, 7th, and 8th grade classes.  Mrs. Johnson strives to build a positive self-concept and instill a "love of learning" in each child. Her classes are filled with creativity, independent learning centers, small group activities, music, creative play, reading labs, math stations and lots of hands-on learning experiences.

Mrs. Johnson's students are encouraged to always do their best and live each day in a kind, loving, caring way to follow Jesus' examples. Mrs. Johnson loves teaching in parochial schools because she can educate the "whole" child, including their academic, social, and spiritual sides.  Mrs. Johnson and her husband, Dean, have four of their own children. She loves to sing, play her flute, read, camp, swim, vacation and spend time with her family.

Second Grade & Third Grade
Mrs. Shannon Perryman
My classroom is special to St. Joseph's because: The various field trips, writing activities, group learning, and learning about our Catholic faith and prayers. This is a year for us to take the skills we have learned and use them to build success and the next levels. And, during second grade, we will make our First Reconciliation and First Communion. It is a very special year for us. Students' favorite activities: Writing, reading, drawing pictures, craft/art activities and field trips.

4th and 5th grade
Mrs. Jump.
I have a degree in Elementary Education with a B.S. in Biology, Chemistry and Agribusiness. I have 20 years teaching experience in Catholic Schools. I enjoy teaching at St. Joseph's because that is my vocation. My Catholic faith is who I am and I share it with my students. I teach my students to appreciate God's creation, respect it and themselves. I teach science to the 4th-8th grades students. My students learn by doing hands on science experiments. 6th-8th grades have the option to participate in the OSEF regional science fair at MSU. I also teach religion, history, and writing. My students enjoy participating in regional Language Arts Fair, education fair, art, and essay writing contests. They look forward in taking field trips to the Hammons Performing Arts, water treatment plant, local caves, and a wildlife conservation area to study pond habitat and fish. My goal is for my students to love God and to love science!

6th and 7th grade
Mrs. Claran Aug
- This is my 16th year of teaching at St. Joseph School. I am the math coordinator. I teach math to the 4th-8th grade students. I use a variety of manipulatives to help students understand math concepts. Students use geometry to create art projects that are entered into the annual math-art contest. I sponsor a math club after school and take students to area math contests. In addition to teaching math, I teach religion and American history. My students are often involved in group activities, projects, and unit work. They write weekly and submit their writing to the annual Language Arts Fair. The 6th and 7th graders work hard and begin to realize that they must become more responsible for their academic success.

Eighth Grade
Ms. Tammy Ames.
My classroom is special to St. Joseph's because: In eighth grade we are good role models for younger students. We head up student council, work on service projects, help out in the community through clean up and donations to organizations. We visit our state capital, Jefferson City as a field trip. Students' favorite activities: Students like to write creative stories and poems. They also enjoy reading new books and learning about different authors.

We were drawn to St. Joseph Catholic School by the Montessori preschool curriculum. Upon meeting with Mrs. McEvoy we knew this would be a great experience for our daughter. We never expected the vast change in confidence and social skills that our little girl could accomplish in a year. We believe the difference was the great attention to our daughter’s strengths, weaknesses and the promotion of the positive elements of her personality. Now as a Kindergartner at St. Joseph she is confidant and has social skills she might not have otherwise achieved if not for her preschool experience. St. Joseph Catholic School encourages children to be themselves and accentuate their individual ability. The teachers take great care to know each child throughout their pre-k and elementary growth. We could not imagine our daughters ever attending another school! You could not find a more dedicated principal than Mrs. Batson. She knows every child from pre-k through 8th grade. She is deeply involved in each students success and education.

St. Joseph has been a lifeline for our daughter. I believe that the consistency, structure and continued interaction with the same faculty and staff members over the last seven years is the reason that she is doing so well academically, socially and emotionally. I believe that putting kindergarten through eighth grade students in one building helps the younger students to develop self-confidence, helps the older students to learn responsibility and compassion and teaches all the students about the value of community and every person in it. I am grateful for the dedication of everyone at St. Joseph.

The education that St. Joseph School has provided my daughter goes far beyond learning her ABC's. She has attended preschool for 2 years and Kindergarten this year. The change in my daughter is a direct result of the education and Catholic teaching that she has received. I cannot imagine my daughter going to another school. St. Joseph is the BEST school for my child and I would not hesitate to recommend this school to anyone I know. The best teachers, the best staff and by far the best students you will ever meet! My family is blessed to be part of St. Joseph!

-Lorie G.

St. Joseph is the very best school, most especially for my children. You are, I am sure, aware of what my family had to go through in every way, to keep Brooke at St. Jo, hence we are, and will always be, completely and utterly in support of St. Joseph. While there are great schools everywhere, private and public, St. Joseph appeals to an interest group that otherwise would not be satisfied by other schools. Additionally, St. Joseph's presence in the north side sends a welcoming message to under-served and under-represented families that their kids, too, can walk (or be dropped off) at a short distance, in order to receive the kind of education that St. Jo has to offer. Bottom line--We LOVE St. Joseph, and my kids, along with their school-friends, enjoy St. Joseph culture! This is to say also, we were/are concerned that the 'shift' would alter the culture, which is what shaped our children to be who they are today. Thank you so much for your all the care, love, and dedication you have provided to all!

My son said, "I would not have the relationship I have with God if I went to public school and the teachers are the best in the state." The first thing that came to my mind was how much my child is loved at St Joseph. I don't mean that he's popular, I mean, I see that with all the kids. Everyone knows everyone else regardless of grade or age difference. I love that they get to interact not only in the classroom and playground but also when the older students help with the younger children during mass. The devotion of the teachers is beyhond measure. I could go on and on but I'm afraid I'll tear up...

Our son is in the fifth grade and has been attending St. Joseph Elementary since Kindergarten. We can't say enough about this wonderful little school. Class sizes are small, allowing for more individual time with the teacher. Every teacher that our son has had through the years has been very professional, dedicated and devoted to the students, their success and improving their self-esteem. We see a confidence and sense of accomplishment in our son that continues to grow with every year he has attended. Through the many service projects that the students are involved in throughout the school year, our son has also gained a sense of responsibility and developed a caring heart to help others. We give St. Joseph Elementary our highest recommendation!

-Brenda R.

We moved our daughter from a traditional daycare setting to St. Joseph's preschool program last year because she was so bored at her current daycare. Her teacher, Mrs. McEvoy, is great and our daughter thinks so too. She actually likes going to school now! We believe St. Joseph's school setting has prepared our daughter better for kindergarten next year. I would recommend St. Joseph school to any parent looking for a more structured environment for their children.

-Sean S.

I just wanted to tell you how pleased my husband and I have been with St. Joseph's school the past three years. Our son has been enjoying the challenges each year in all of his subjects, but he especially loves those of math and science. This year, he qualified for the Duke Talent search, and is very excited about being accepted to take the ACT in 7th grade. My younger daughters also love the school. Both girls love attending girl scouts and participating in the programs that are offered throughout the year, such as Spanish and music. They still come home singing the "AMERICA, I love America" song everyday at home. Mrs. Johnson, their homeroom Kindergarten teacher, runs a very organized and structured classroom, yet allows for each student to express themselves in their own work. Please pass this along to your teachers, who work so hard with their students.
